Dirty or gross is usually fine. Misogynistic or Rasicst is mostly not.
I guess my line is really about the cruelty in the telling. If the teller has that knowing twinkle in his eye (or voice) I can usually appreciate the craft. Are you poking at convention and decorum or are you just being a dick?
Just think about how The Aristocrats joke can weave back and forth across the line.
And take those awful sex position jokes (donkey punch, angry dragon etc...) I think they're borderline and at least creative on some level when told in jest, but offensive when told maliciously.
Tell me a new one and I might gasp out a guffaw. Tell me twenty and I won't be able to look at you the same again.
I don't know if that makes sense but humour is bound to context.
