The Time Traveler's Wife - Movie?
After I read The Time Traveler's wife, given to me by a good friend, I was kind of hoping there would be a movie of it. Just the complication of creating something like what was in the book, seemed fascinating. But though the book is dark and depressing at times, the trailer for the movie (to be released in August) left me quite disappointed, because it seemed all sunny and carefree. There are references to the difficult moments of the book, but only a very skimmed attempt at it. I'm tempted to watch it, but feel that from the casting to the way it has been filmed, that I will be let down. Anybody else like the book? Will you be watching the film? Why do all good books get ruined by their filmic counterparts? I feel the same way about the movie for 'Love in the Time of Cholera'. Great book, average movie. Damn it.

Whether we write or speak or do but look
We are ever unapparent. What we are
Cannot be transfused into word or book.
Our soul from us is infinitely far.
However much we give our thoughts the will
To be our soul and gesture it abroad,
Our hearts are incommunicable still.
In what we show ourselves we are ignored.
The abyss from soul to soul cannot be bridged
By any skill of thought or trick of seeming.
Unto our very selves we are abridged
When we would utter to our thought our being.
We are our dreams of ourselves, souls by gleams,
And each to each other dreams of others' dreams.
Fernando Pessoa, 1918
