In drag racing, NHRA regulations require straps over the engines to keep them and other parts from flying off into the crowd in case of a catastrophic failure.
I'd say this is a good example as to why those regs. are in place!

I just read through the comments on youtube and someone mentioned that too much pressure from the turbos would cause the fuel to get pushed past the pistons and into the sump. When the fuel in the sump ignites, boom! the block blows off. At one point in the video you can see that the pistons (and I'd assume, the crank) are still in the engine bay.
