| Why did I know Phil was going to post that this morning?
Also on June 1st, 1813- The Navy gained its motto as the mortally wounded commander of the frigate Chesapeake, Capt. James Lawrence, said "Don't give up the ship" during a losing battle with a British frigate.

So the motto of "don't give up the ship" began when we lost a ship? My Navy experience makes a lot more sense now.
