With players like Owen, Martens, Viduka... a lack of quality shouldnt have been Newcastle's problem, it really seemed to me that very few of them failed. And Shearer has to take some of the flak for that. Under him they won 1 out of 8 I think? Even an ordinary run of form would have taken them above an awful Hull team.
I felt the same frustration with Norwich City on the final day getting thrashed by Charlton... I dont want to see people running till the point of physical collapse and no sane fan does... but in the last game when they needed a win to have a chance, and over the last few games, they just meekly surrendered - no passion, no desperation, no fire... just utter cowardice. I wanted to see at least that losing hurt the players at least a little as much as it hurt me and the other fans.
Norwich went a similar way to Newcastle as well - appointing a beloved ex player for a short term gamble to avoid the drop. Gunny is a decent man (not sure that Shearer is, but Shearer is an honourable man at least, who would not have tamely wandered through the Villa game as some of his star did) - but at the end of the day they both lacked the skill, experience and knowledge to get the best out of the players when it really counted.
