Fox carries a lot of blame, but the first episode was pretty weak compared to where the series went. The second half of the season was outstanding. Even with Firefly and Buffy, the series openers (and I do mean the aired-out-of-order pilot for Firefly) were relatively weak compared to later episodes.
Joss would do well to start with a bang for Dollhouse season 2. Something huge.
