Do you have any other background besides nursing? Are you looking for related jobs only?
If you haven't already, you might want to try volunteering. (What?! Work for free?!) It's a great way to pick up new skills, exercise the ones you have, and, most important, to meet people as you give back to your community.
Most jobs don't come by answering ads or mailing out resumes. Most jobs come from people you know, and volunteering is a way to meet people. They will know of your situation eventually, and if something comes up, they'll let you know. People, generally, like to help other people when they can (especially if they too are volunteering for whatever reason).
When deciding on where to volunteer, think of causes that mean something to you. Think of issues that may have affected your friends or family, and find an organization that does work in that area. Find out about their volunteer programs. Most organizations are always looking for help.
Who do you think runs these things usually? People with a lot of contacts. People who will know what you can do and will think of you if they know someone who needs to fill a position.
