I always figured if the shields of the Enterprise could handle fire from TIE fighters, it would stand a good chance against the Death Star. My reasoning was that the Enterprise would only be destroyed by the main planet destroying weapon. I always figured the Enterprise should be able to maneuver away from the ray, then take it out, followed by a looooong systemic destruction of ship to ship lasers and launch bays. I always wondered if the pride of the Federation would have enough munitions to destroy the Death Star or merely cripple it
