Linux and ThinkPad

Hi all,
my experiance with Linux systems has been rather limited so I have gotten myself into slight trouble.

The senario is that I found an old IBM ThinkPad iSeries 1171, this baby isn't on par with the latest bloatware from Microsoft so I decided to try out (for real this time) the Linux world. I happened to have a Kubuntu install cd (ver. 6 something). The install went well but I'm not happy with Kubuntu so I decied to "upgrade" to Ubuntu since I had played slightly with that before. The problem is that I'm unable to start the Ubuntu (9.04 desktop). What I get after selecting "Innstall" from the menu is "Kernel panic -- attempt to kill init".
If anyone could point me in the right direction so I can find what parameters I have to set to get the install working.

Yours
ZB
