I love this game but to really get the full benefit of it, you need some mods. Without them, there's no real storyline or ways to effectively control or create a kingdom/empire. They also add a lot of different units, weapons, armor, quests etc. My favorite ones are Calradia at War and Native Expansion. Couched lance is still overpowered though.
