The eating special meals thing is not one I'd noticed, until a few years ago, when my then wife complained that she hated Easter dinner at my mother's house, as my mum always cooked baked ham with broad beans.
This was in my mid twenties, and I had never noticed - I'd not realised it was a specific tradition (rather than something my mum did), but seeing several of you mention ham, I'm assuming that this is not unusual?
