I think a major part of it is just finding that connection with someone. Some people click, others don't. That's pretty much how I see it anyhow, and I've been rather active in terms of finding people.
More than anything else I look for someone who is genuinely engaging and interesting to be around. Someone honest and forthcoming, who enjoys the same things I do and doesn't mind sharing time with me while doing them.
Sexy librarian-type glasses don't hurt either.
