He's the only musical act (solo or group) that I've seen in Memphis that could keep the crowd completely, silently enthralled the entire time he performed.
I've seen lots of shows in various venues here and the crowd is always loud and obnoxious. I've even been to special invitation-only events for a few shows and the crowd is still loud and obnoxious (Cat Power was particularly bad; they were trying to film the show for VH1 and couldn't use any of it). Not comparing Cat Power to Tom Waits--I'm illustrating a point about how bad the audiences can be here.
Tom Waits held the audience in the palm of his fucking hand ... he was and still is brilliant.
