It is terrible, but they can screw you over pretty good. I'd try to get it straightened out, myself. Possibly pose a question to a lawyer or something.
Since your benefits out are supposedly based on what you pay in, it might just be that you would just have to start making your payments, or just never get any benefits. But I would be worried about what the feds will think about you "cheating" their big cash cow out of its feed.
