Actually, I find my growing knowledge of sociology very helpful in the classroom. If teaching is the goal, I wouldn't necessarily discount a sociology degree out of hand, nor would I pursue just an education degree by itself. Many schools offer a similar program to the one I am currently in, which is a double degree program in (subject area of choice)/Education. I will graduate with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Science as well as a B.A. in Education. The coursework is really not that much more over just one degree. The other option is to pursue an initial Bachelor's degree in the subject area of choice and then go on to a Master's in Teaching program, which typically adds up to a full year of school beyond a B.A. or B.S.
Someone who has majored in Sociology and minored in a subject such as History would be able to get endorsed as a Social Studies teacher.
