Ellen was the fifth. She was on Earth, and I suspect that she was the one that orchestrated the resurrections of the final five. Because of that we now know Starbuck wasn't the last cylon and can move forward under the assumption that finding Earth was orchestrated by the third party.

They could also go in the Matrix direction where the cycle is broken, but I think that would be less interesting.

Yes, I think that's what we're supposed to think right now. The population of the Twelve Colonies were just another kind of cylon. Or? Maybe there was a reason that the thirteenth tribe took such a different direction? Maybe that separation is a clue that the colonials were human. It's hard to say, and knowing Moore, we're likely jumping to premature conclusions.

How would the long dead humans resurrect Starbuck? Nah, whomever has been orchestrating things is still very much an active force. Head Six, Head Baltar, and Head Leoben are all very much connected with the rag-tag fleet finding Earth via resurrecting Starbuck and changing the behaviors of people in the humans and cylon. Baltar becoming a monotheistic prophet likely will play a substantial role in things to come, and you can bet Hera is directly involved.
