If you have ever seen those shows on how commercially mass-produced foods are made, that usually turns most people off of them. There's just something about seeing these incredibly large amounts of otherwise "normal" food being made that grosses the average viewer out.
Same goes for beer. I have been homebrewing for a little over a year now, and to see a 5 gallon batch actually fermenting is somewhat disgusting. It's all frothy and bubbly with all sorts of solids floating around in it. Mrs. Coaster saw it and said... "And you actually DRINK that?" Then theres the dead yeast and crud that eventually settles to the bottom, smells like a sewer.
