When you go to a no-kill shelter you are truly helping the shelter. They have a hard time managing their budgets when they become full of difficult to get rid of animals. On the other hand going to a "kill" shelter does save a life. There certainly are positives regardless of the decision. I personally would rather support the no-kill shelters as I have seen several fail over time and I believe that they offer a good service. I too believe that I would have a hard time knowing as I left that several animals would be likely put down should I not choose them. Regardless, the animal euthanasia is done in a fairly painless manner and beats them suffering/starving on the streets.
If you are seriously concerned about finding a compatible animal another option is to sign up to foster animals. In doing so you will likely have to bring them to adoption events but it would be a way to allow yourself time to decide on an animal without committing to the pet.
