I picked "doesn't matter" only because that's the only middle choice. My actual answer is "The one that fits their needs better." I love animal shelters and I love going and meeting a zillion animals and finding which one I mesh best with. My wife and I did that when we found our cat after getting back from our honeymoon. We found a beautiful lynx point Siamese, much to our delight. At the same time, we're planning to get a pure breed show cat when we can afford one in a couple years and, when we get around to getting a dog, we're going to get a pure breed malamute or husky. They're different kinds of animals and different experiences. I think you have to be reasonable and responsible with your pets, and while I'd love to be able to rescue every shelter animal in the theoretical, that's not always going to yield the kind of pet you want or like.
