Well, I just viewed the 2008 Christmas special. I quite enjoyed it, though I had kinda assumed that Spoiler:
he regenerated during this. The title of the episode hinted at this - of course it was a furphy
I'm looking forward to 2010 - the new head writer has written some of my favourite recent episodes (like Blink), so it is definitely in good hands.
