If you get in a fight in a bar and no one has any worse injuries than a broken nose or something - then you'd probably get a police caution or at worst a community service order (in the UK)
If you walked up to a pram and punched and kicked a baby for no reason and severely wounded it and caused lifelong disability, you'd probably get 20 years to life.
This case is somewhere inbetween.
It must be taken into account that he is a man and the victim was female, and also that he didnt simply strike her once, but kicked her several times on the floor.
8 years sentence, serve 4 if he's good - sounds fair to me for the gravity of this assault.

you kick a baby, and you deserve a mental institution not jail.
so you think its ok for someone to spend 15% of an average persons lifespan in jail for beating someone up?
the article didnt mention how bad the beating was, but if she had recieved serious or permanent injuries, im sure it would have been highlighted in the article.
even 4 years is too much. 6 months to a year with anger management and councelling is fair to me if it was a really big beating. but then again everyones idea of 'fair' is different.
