Sorry I missed this, I am from this area. I've done a lot of fishing on the Columbia River. The house I still own is about a 5 min drive from the river. Used to be able to leave my house and have my boat in the water in less then 10 min. A good friend of mine built his house out of old growth fir he found in the river. They used to float log rafts down the river and out to sea to transport them. Many of the logs that sank remain today and are in good shape. He would find logs at low tide and attach several 55 gal drums to them. When the tide rose so did the logs. He then floated them to a boat ramp and trucked them home. Somewhere I have a picture of his house that I took during a fly over for him. I'll post it if I find it.
As for bathing in it as a baby? No, never even saw the river until I was probably 15. From Salem originally my family didn't travel much, still don't. I'm the only wondering soul in the bunch.
