Lola Montes (restored German version) Max Ophuls dir.
This was Ophuls last film. It's a European Hollywood spectacle, with a cast of thousands, elaborate costumes and sets, widescreen, and that fifties colour. It's not quite as good as la Ronde, which it resembles. I liked the variety of characters in la Ronde, and Lola Montes has Lola Montes and a handful of men who have more or less the same relationship to her. On the plus side, Martine Caroline is nice to look at, and more of Anton Walbrook is a good thing. But still, i liked Walbrook's as le raconteur in la Ronde more.
Young Frankenstein
Why the Frankenstein themed movies in the seventies? There was this one, Rocky Horror, Espíritu de la colmena... probably a few i've forgotten. This one is faithful to the thirties version, but where Mel Brooks sees an opportunity to make a juvenile gag, he takes it. It was more funny when i was more juvenile. I did like Gene Hackman as the blind man. "I was going to make espresso."
