I don't have any real life experience with them in urban areas. But in rural areas they can indeed suck. I rented a car one time in Beaverton, Or after dropping off my truly most hated appliance, my Ford F-150, at the repair shop. The car I rented had a GPS system in with traffic alerts, weather alerts. I guess it would even recommend a restaurant. I got in it and thought "hey this is interesting, I'll input my home address near Astoria and see what route it suggests." The idea it came up with was drive through McMinnville to Grand Ronde then over to Tillamook and up Hwy 101 to Astoria. It gave me a total est. travel time of four plus hours, which I think was a low ball number. I decided to do the Cornelius Pass to Hwy 30 and was home inside an hour and twenty minutes.
