The clipping problem stems from the loudness wars. It's clipped in production because nobody will listen to a sound engineer who says that a customer can turn up the volume if they want to; the people in charge want it blasting even if it makes it sound like shit (see: everything ever released by the Red Hot Chili Peppers)
