In a word? Rush. Millions of apathetic voters, mostly males age 18-35 became politically active after hearing Rush Limbaugh's simplified bullshit political theories.
The uber rich in the GOP aren't stupid. They know they aren't the base, but the base that benefits from all these gummint programs they denounce saves them tax dollars. So they're happy.
I seem to remember a time when the dems were the tax and spend party, while the GOP was the less government party. That doesn't resonate with "Joe Sixpack".
But those gays? Wanting to marry? And that Obama guy who refuses to wear a flag lapel pin? And those flag burners? Gosh durn they make their blood boil.
And that is why we have Sarah Palin, a vote and coronary away from runnin' th' entire works.
