No food, no water. Rather than spending meal time eating, one focuses on prayer, reflection, and the giving of alms. Some families meet up during their normal meal times to read scripture or pray together, setting a book of scripture out on each plate and a bookmark in place of a utensil.
Ramadan is a wonderful "holiday" - I can't imagine keeping such a habit up for a month. One must note, though, that Ramadan adds the delightful element of community - my muslim friends at Berkeley would meet up with their friends and family each evening to end their day's fasting.
