Seems his voting record was Democrat - after himself being busted out of jail by Kennedy - but with the Dixiecrats being dominant in the southern states for the 50's, who knows. He could have been organising with republicans at that time.
Were republicans in the south any less racist than the Dixiecrats?
Friends report differently to the ad, though.
