I think this will definitely help boost participation in the awards...
as far as the keeping of awards, maybe once the term that it was awarded for, the award disappears from next to the users posts, and is displayed in an award frame in the user profile.
That way it is clear who the current award holders are, but you still get a record of what awards a person has had.
