Actually Marie Antoinette's take was rather different. She was told that the French people were starving because they had no bread.
Thus, she told them to eat cake.
She was so out of touch with nonroyal life that she couldn't comprehend lacking something she wanted. So if they didn't have their appetizers on hand, she was giving them permission to eat their desserts first, assuming dinner would be coming.
Just saying. I love this thread, btw.
And I've always heard it said "six IN one, half a dozen IN the other" :P
