Honestly, the single player is massively boring. The low unit max and extremely limited resources make big games impossible (not to mention that the unit uniqueness can't match StarCraft at all). While I respect your opinion, I'm going to have to as well respectfully disagree with you here. Maybe it's just me, but even more so than the gameplay, the storyline is what made me fall in love with that game. I always viewed Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos's single player campaign as just an interactive story. It's not war and craziness until you get online, which you mentioned and I entirely agree with.
Basically, play single player for the beautiful storyline, and play online for the battles
