I don't think it's necessarily a movement... it's just something that has been very strong in American culture for a long time (I would say at least the last half of the 20th century). There's an interesting article about it here, though one might say it's biased because it's from an Elite Publication... but hopefully it helps somehow to explain the phenomenon, since I don't think I would do a very good job here:
