Abaya, what would you rather they do with their money? Would it be better for them to just let it sit in investments? Spend it on a larger, but still not ostentatious house? While it isn't how you would spend the money, (or me, for that matter) it did spread the money to others who provided the goods and services to make that wedding happen. If we eliminated frivolous and ostentatious spending, a lot of people would be out of a job.

It might be that they want certain things, and are fortunate enough to have the money to make that happen. To use a different example, suppose someone loves to travel and spends a great deal of money visiting all kinds of exotic places. Not luxury travel, but a lot of economy flights. Are they buying happiness? Is it irresponsible or unethical to spend money on travel when you could instead use it to put a down payment on a house and live a more traditional life?
