Celebrating his new Ferrari contract today at Monza, Kimi Raikkonen topped the timesheets at the end of free practice for the Italian team with a best lap of 1:23.861s. The rains that washed out much of the morning session had passed overhead this afternoon leaving the circuit dry for the bulk of the second 90-minute free practice session.

Raikkonen moved to the head of the timesheets in the final minutes of what was a surprisingly uneventful session, as the teams completed their tyre programme with the softer option Bridgestone tyre.

BMW Sauber topped the test at Monza two weeks ago and looked strong again this afternoon with Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld recording the second and third fastest times respectively, both within a tenth of Raikkonen’s best lap.

Lewis Hamilton, undoubtedly smarting after his Belgian Grand Prix surprise, set the fourth fastest time with McLaren Mercedes team-mate Heikki Kovalainen nearly four-tenths shy and seventh best.

Nico Rosberg ran well in the Williams Toyota and was on the pace throughout the session before setting the fifth fastest time ahead of Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari. Williams need a good result after a difficult summer and in Rosberg’s hands at least the FW30 is performing well in the ultra-low downforce configuration.

Proving that having Renault power is not a disadvantage at Monza, Mark Webber set the eighth fastest time in his Red Bull with team-mate David Coulthard six-tenths down in 11th position and splitting the Toro Rosso Ferrari duo of Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais.

Adrian Sutil was arguably the surprise of the session as he ran consistently in the top six some time before being bumped down the order in the final minutes to ninth. Sutil, who suffered a mechanical problem in the pitlane ahead of the chequered flag, recorded the ninth best time in his Force India Ferrari, just eight-tenths off the ultimate pace
