I'm curious. And I say this as a person who opposes capital punishment in almost all cases.
Everyone keeps saying "this guy needs help." Has anyone ever heard of a case where someone who was -this- brainfucked, self-centered, and stupid -ever- got -any- better? I haven't. Charlie Manson is still Charlie Manson, Richard Speck stayed Richard Speck, and something tells me that no amount of therapy is going to "fix" someone who thinks nuking a baby to keep her quiet is acceptable behavior or a good idea. This guy is either a sociopath or a complete and utter idiot, and in neither case does he ever need to inflict himself upon society again.
We shoot rabid dogs, because they can't be cured and can only injure, kill, and infect their victims. No help for them exists, and none is likely. And frankly, I'd continue to trust my 12-bore to deal with such problems; I'd have to see a -LOT- of successes before I'd take home a "formerly rabid" dog. I find myself wondering at times whether we shouldn't handle certain people the same way. If they cannot be fixed (and I don't think this kind of headfuck can be), they remain a significant danger to those around them. If we cannot shoot them, we should at very least cage them until they die.
