Yeah there has been more reporting on this so far. Apparently there are two groups: "peaceful protesters" and the anarchists. Unfortunately, they got mixed up. When the anarchists were arrested, the other "peaceful protesters" actually cheered and applauded. Police did a good job here.
Also, let's be clear: this is NOT BECAUSE OF THE RNC. These things also happened at the DNC in Denver. It's a bunch of anarchists who were bent on causing trouble no matter what regardless of political party. The Minneapolis police actually consulted with the Denver police regarding their violence.

I disagree. When Clinton came to LA a few years back (1999?), I was slammed to the pavement by the police when I took out the trash from my store on Westwood Boulevard when he came to town. I wasn't even protesting. I was just taking out the trash, The police never bothered to inform us that the president was going to pass by this way to UCLA. No warning, just a brutal slam to the pavement and a big cut on my chin.
