Man, I weep for this generation (well, not really, it's just a figure of speech) who do not understand the awesomeness that is Kirk.
By the time Picard came along, half the galaxy was mapped - there were supply stations and friendly allies everywhere. The job was easy, even Riker could have done it.
When Kirk was kicking ass, everything was unkown. It took weeks for messages to reach Starfleet command. He and his crew had to do everything themselves. It was all done by the seat of their pants, and true ingenuity and courage was required.
You all probably think Alan Alda is a better man than Charlton Heston, too.
