I understand some of the stuff on the app store is pay, and some is free, but me personally would much rather have a rather large homebrew community with free apps and support than apple dictating what is out there.

Well, there's one of those too.
App Store has literally thousands of free applications available right now, and thousands more that run from $0.99 to $20 or so. And jailbreaking the iPhone is easy (a download-an-app-and-click-a-button proposition) that gives access to hundreds more free homebrew apps.
I wouldn't buy a phone that doesn't have an open software platform. Or "open-ish", like the App Store is. Yes, Apple vets every app that goes into the App Store, but they post dozens of new ones a day. It's not like they're being all that tight about it.
