Were these machines laptops? I think ubuntu might have problems with the laptop screens(or video card) sometimes, so adding boot flags helped me get it on to my laptop. Actually, it's amazing, but all I had to do to find this out was google my laptop's model number (F730us) + linux (or ubuntu).
Often times linux fans will have figured it out and are helping others out with the same machine in linux forums.
