Well, if you ask me (and actually, I just started a related thread about this)... one of the problems is that people don't want to feel guilty for being okay with this kind of behavior. So they make a joke out of it, or tell others to "lighten up," or condemn the person for being offended. I would say that it's a pretty strong component of human nature--I see it in myself all the time, when I feel guilty about something and get defensive, or start minimizing the other party's feelings--but that's getting pretty psychological here. I'll mention it in the other thread.
