well, clipless pedals are an absolute necessity if you're going to be at all serious about the sport. Speedplays are nice for some people because they are a) double sided and b) have more "float" (knee rotation) than most other types. The downside is that they can sometimes be more of a challenge to get in and out of, and they are less adjustable than the "normal" pedals from Look, Shimano, etc.
Congratulations on joining the scene. Depending on where you live, stop in some shops and see if there are any group rides for beginners in your area. Road biking is one of those sports that I find is greatly enhanced by doing it with others.
