I don't think it is an issue with an upgrade on the HDD because it is still the same system that wrote the data. Regardless of the data being just a game save and not covered under copyright, I think this is all just a DRM issue. So whoever it was above worrying about upgrading and with the number of people who have already done it I wouldn't get worried about it.
The data is written by one system, so therefore cannot be read or written by another system, unless you are just upgrading the HDD and merely copying it from one place within the same system to another place, ie. the bigger HDD.
Someone had made mention on the PS Forums about the PS3 not being able to recognize the file system of a drive previously used internally once you try to use it as an external drive so I am thinking this will just be a wipe and use the drive for storage.
