Yeah, that's what I was afraid of...
Read it as an external drive with your PS3 or with a regular PC? Maybe you could hook it up to a PC and use a recovery program to snatch some of the data proper off it. That's a bit of work just for some game saves, but the data is there....there has to be a way to get it off, eh?
