I think that the desire to skim over things and be information processors rather than deep readers has always been there, it is just that google fosters it when you can find the answer to something in two seconds rather than doing a lot of research in a library - though I often go to the library to do this anyways
However I agree with a lot of the posters here that there are numerous times when deep reading is necessary and it is no harder to do this with or without knowledge of the internet.
It is hard to say google has made us stupider when it has done a mountain of good.
