Turns out the one guy who has replied a few times, really **seems** like he knows his stuff.
Says that with an external or USB enclosure the PS3 will only recognize FAT or FAT32, not it's internal file system so I wouldn't be able to pull the data off the drive that way. He also said that he has multiple 'nix distro's running and has not had any luck with PS3 data files on any of them the 'nix OS will not recognize the files and allow you to alter them.
Oh well, guess I just have MANY hours to spend on Burnout Paradise to get back to the Elite License, looks like I will be burning through Drake's Fortune again, not to mention the hours I will be putting in on my new copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 that came with the new system.
*note to self* Put system back in entertainment center while not playing, it cannot over heat in the enclosed space if it isn't running.
