Have you guys looked into the Awards Showcase hack for vBulletin? A great example is shown
here. Allows you to use various sized icons for display in profile or in threads (small in threads, obviously)... allows multiple awards to a user with a "reason" tag for each. Looks quite inobtrusive. I believe there is a version for vB 3.5.x
