Yeah, there's definitely something up with your install.
For something along a little bit of a different line, you might want to check out inkscape:

As the site says, it's "An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. "
I don't have much in the way of artistic/drawing talent, but it's a heck of a lot of fun to play with.
