As a little boy my dad started calling me Mókus which is Hungarian for squirrel. So many of my adult relatives also called me that. They say I always liked squirrels from the first time I could run after them. It's also close to my name in Hungarian, where Nicholas is Miklós. Last year when I had squirrels living in the walls of my 3rd floor dormers, I hated squirrels and managed to evict them for good. When I hunted I ate squirrels and they also taste quite good braised with mushrooms...these being wild squirrels eating corn, nuts, berries not crummy city squirrels.
When I was about 6 to 12 yo my best friend's grandfather started to call me Sauerkraut, which he meant affectionately and assoicated it with me being Hungarian vs. most people in the neighborhood being Polacks.
In my early to late teenage years, with my hair always being one of the longest in the neighborhood and with my version windblown character to it, some of the guys I hung out with started to call me Jungle...so that stuck for quite a few years.
Otherwise, most people call me Nick so that's my common nickname.
