A lot of it is tax--alcohol is often subject to "sin tax" and depending on the state those can be obscene.
Here is a graphic from the Washington State Liquor Control Commission that breaks down the amount of tax and the distribution of tax on an average liquor sale:
Washington State is an ABC (alcoholic beverage control) state, and so the taxes are fairly high; most ABC states compare in pricing/tax, but non-ABC states usually have a much lower tax rate. Many people in WA/OR stock up on liquor when they travel to California or Nevada, both of which are not ABC states.
