It will be a couple of years until Canada must switch over but most of the Free to Air channels (at least in the Toronto area) are running HD Digital over the air now. Toronto has an abundance of signals available (including many from the US).
That said, when the swtich occurs in the US you will lose the US channels if you don't switch to digital.
By the by... Over the air HD is better than what the cable/sat companies are providing. The bandwidth on over the air is much higher.
